Carolyn Bourdeaux Statement on Georgia abortion ban sponsor Renee Unterman’s candidacy for GA-07

Bourdeaux’s team launches digital ad reminding voters about Unterman’s key role in passing dangerous abortion ban

Suwanee, Georgia -- On Thursday, Carolyn Bourdeaux, Democratic candidate for Georgia’s 7th Congressional District, released the following statement responding to Renee Unterman’s long-expected entry into the race for Georgia’s 7th District.

“Renee Unterman is a direct threat to women — to our health and to our fundamental right to control our own bodies. Senator Unterman is the architect of the law that would subject women and their doctors to criminal prosecution and lengthy prison sentences for terminating a pregnancy. Renee is out of step with the people of the 7th district, and we will not give her a platform to take her agenda to Washington,” said Carolyn Bourdeaux.

Georgia currently has the highest rate of maternal mortality in the country, and the 7th Congressional District has over 132,000 people without health insurance. Rather than addressing these devastating problems, State Senator Renee Unterman authored the Georgia law banning abortions after six weeks.

In order to personally usher the legislation, HB 481, through the Georgia Senate, Unterman requested that the bill be placed in her committee for review. After moving the bill through her committee, Unterman was the only woman in the Senate to support the legislation. Unterman called the bill’s signing the “culmination of [her] political career.”
